Incident Overview

Inciweb information was updated: 2 months ago

Watch Incident Commander Evan Wright give a thorough video update and provide an overview of the management plan for this wildfire. The Little Yamsay Fire is being managed in a confine/contain strategy. Simply stated, we have created indirect containment lines using a series of roads and handlines to keep this wildfire in a predetermined footprint. Our group of experienced, professional wildland firefighters will conduct a series of firing operations to safely and methodically burn the fuels between the main fire and our established containment lines, reintroducing a low intensity fire to the landscape that will promote forest health and fuels reduction. This 35-acre lightning-caused wildfire is in an area of the forest far from any homes or structures and in area planned for prescribed fire treatment. This time of year, wildfires can meet objectives by burning surface fuels and small-diameter trees while sparing mature trees. Fuel moistures remain high and a low percentage of tree mortality is expected.A Type 3 Incident Management Team (IMT) assumed command of the Little Yamsay Fire Tuesday, April 30 at 0600 to allow the Forest to focus on conducting prescribed fire. The fire management plan consists of three phases of firing operations to achieve objectives: Phase One will increase the fire footprint by 1,208 acres. Phase One was completed May 4.Phase Two will add another 1,055 acres. Phase Two was initiated May 4.Phase Three will include additional 3,712 acres. Phase Three was initiated May 4Once the three-phase firing operation is complete, the Little Yamsay Fire final size will be close to 6,000 acres.
