Crews on the Payson Ranger District and Department of Forestry and Fire Management (DFFM) resources are engaged with initial attack on the Brady Fire on the side of the Mogollon Rim, about 11 miles north of Payson. Firefighters are working in steep, rugged terrain which makes operations difficult. Conditions are extremely dry with the lack of monsoonal moisture. Continued hot and dry weather is expected, and there is a possibility of monsoon winds which could cause additional issues for containment. Fire officials are working closely with the neighboring Coconino National Forest. For the health and safety of firefighters and the public, please refrain from traveling near the fire area so operations can proceed unimpeded. A closure order is soon to be implemented for the area.
The fire started Sunday, August 6, around 2pm, 11 miles north of Payson and 11 miles northeast of Pine in Gila County. The fire is 100+ acres and is producing two columns. It is burning through Ponderosa, grass and brush and is pushing to the north and the east toward the Rim. It started on DFFM jurisdiction and has since moved onto the Tonto NF.
