The Gopher Fire is located in the Sky Lakes Wilderness, approximately 11 miles east of Prospect. The fire is the result of 5 small fires that burned together after the lightning storm that moved through the area September 5th. The fire is burning within the perimeter of the 2008 Middle Fork Fire.

Current Situation

Total Personnel:
Size (Acres):
Estimated Containment Date:
Monday September 30th, 2019 approx. 12:00 AM
Fuels Involved:
Fire burning in 2008 Middle Fork fire scar. Heavy snag component. Fire burning in steep terrain. Considerable amounts of dead and down timber fuel accumulation.
Significant Events:
Minimal, smoldering.
Area has received significant precipitation (excess of 1.25" in the past 24-hours). Rainfall has wet all surface fuels. Widely scattered and isolated heavy fuels will continue to retain heat and consume in place until additional moisture occurs.

Planned Outlook

Planned Actions:
Scout for opportunities to go direct. Hot Spotting and cold trailing existing fire edge.
Projected Incident Activity:
12 hours:
Expecting additional rain showers. Fire behavior will be further reduced to widely scattered isolated smoldering duff pockets under the timber canopy, and in-place consumption of heavy fuels.

24 hours:
Numerous rain showers expected through the operational period, with mostly cloudy sky otherwise. Fire behavior will be reduced to isolated smoldering and continued consumption of isolated heavy fuels (log ends, stump holes, snags).

48 hours:
Mostly cloudy with chance of rain showers, and cooler temperatures will reduce fire activity to isolated and widely scattered heavy fuels that will retain heat until consumed or extinguished. Smoke will be essentially eliminated across the fire area.
Fire is 4 miles from private property.

Weather Synopsis

Weather Concerns:
Another rain producing front will move over the area Tuesday afternoon which will be the beginning of an additional 36 more hours of wet conditions. This event along with residual showers on Wednesday will likely bring another inch or more of rain to the fire perimeter ending Thursday morning. A more prolonged period of rain free weather will begin late Thursday with sunnier skies and near normal temperatures through the weekend.
