Canyon Fire 100 percent containment on August 2, 2019

With 88 percent containment of the 326 acre Canyon Fire, firefighters have made significant progress toward containment Aug. 2, 2019. Crews will continue to secure, patrol and monitor lines for flare ups along all sides and particularly along the northern flank near the West Fork of Canyon Creek.

Demobilization is occurring sending many of the resources to other fires or back to their home units. The fire suppression repair plan, to mitigate any adverse impacts resulting from fire suppression activities, has been implemented.

WEATHER: A smattering of lightning and spotty rain occurred during the arrival of a dry cold front Tuesday evening. Aerial detection patrols have been ordered to look for new ignitions. Resources will respond to any new fires or hold overs that flare up in the next few days. The next frontal system is predicted to arrive over southern Idaho, Friday.

RESOURCES: Currently there are 34 personnel on the fire including 3 engines and 1 helicopter.

CLOSURES: Both lanes on this section of Idaho State Highway 21 are open. Please slow down for firefighter and public safety. Bull Trout and Martin Lake Campgrounds are open. Please use bear awareness in the area and store all food appropriately.

SMOKE: Fuel pockets within the interior of the fire perimeter will continue to burn producing scattered smoke plumes. Smoke from the Canyon Fire and other nearby fires may affect the overall air quality of this area. For information on smoke impacts to air quality, visit

LOCATION: The Canyon Fire is located southeast of Bull Trout Campground and 14 miles west of Stanley, Idaho, within the Lowman Ranger District. It is a lightning caused fire and was reported at approximately 5 p.m., July 14, 2019.

RESTRICTIONS: Currently there are no fire restrictions in effect.
Please be careful to ensure campfires are completely out and cold to the touch. We can all make a difference in reducing human-caused fires.
