Incident Overview

The Newman Fire, a lightning-caused wildfire south of Upper Lake Mary, is being allowed to burn and consume dense forest fuels on the Flagstaff Ranger District.

The fire was discovered July 11, it is approximately 5,001 acres (burning in a 22,130 acre planning area) and located about 3 miles directly south of Upper Lake Mary, southeast of the intersection of Forest roads 132D and 655. The fire poses no danger or threat to any residents or structures, but it is producing smoke visible to motorists along Lake Mary Road and can also be seen from Flagstaff.

Firefighters are working today to prepare control lines for ignition operations planned for this upcoming week. Boaters and campers in the area should be aware of smoke impacts, which will increase as burnout operations are conducted.

Campers should refrain from occupying areas south and southwest of Upper Lake Mary where burnout operations will occur. The public should use caution when recreating or driving in the Lake Mary corridor as smoke may impair visibility and firefighters will be working nearby. The immediate fire area is closed for public health and safety. A larger area closure is expected mid-week due to aerial ignition operations. Forest Highway 3 may be closed as needed for smoke impacts. A Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) is in place over the fire area.
