CHP reports Highway 178 is now open 7:30 10/18/2019

Kernville, California, October 18, 2019 - Firefighters responded to a wildland fire, at approximately 12:39 today.  The fire is located 6 miles east of the mouth of the Kern River Canyon (Bakersfield side) on Highway 178, (running between Lake Isabella and Bakersfield).  The "River" fire is burning in grass, on extremely steep and rocky terrain and has been held to 25 acres, due to the quick response from multiple resources.  The River fire is 40 % contained.

The fire is being managed under Unified Command between the US Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management.  Both air and ground resources responded to the fire including 3 air tankers, 3 helicopters, 5 hand crews, 7 engines (and patrols), a water tender, law enforcement, fire investigators, and fire management overhead from the Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management and the Kern County Fire Department.

Personnel from Cal-Trans and California Highway Patrol have been the road blocks on both the Lake Isabella and Bakersfield sides.

Firefighters and their equipment will remain on the fire overnight 10/18/2019.
Projected Incident Activity
Incident activity is projected to very low due to the efforts of initial attack.
Fire is being managed under Unified Command between the US Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management. CHP reports Hwy 178 is being opened at this time. WE ARE ASKING YOU TO BE EXTREMELY CAUTIOUS - THERE ARE FIRE FIGHTERS AND EQUIPMENT ON THE ROAD - FIREFIGHTERS ARE UP ON THE HILL AND GOING INTO AND OUT OF EQUIPMENT PARKED ON THE ROAD.
