Incident Overview

UPDATE: Front Range Fire and Aviation Management Unit will be conducting the Blanca Wetlands prescribed burn today (Saturday, February 29).

Smoke will be visible throughout the day of the burn, mostly during the warmest part of the day.
If conditions change and are not right to continue the burn, ignition operations will stop and will resume when conditions are more favorable.

On Thursday February 27, the Front Range Fire and Aviation Management Unit, with the assistance of the Rio Grande National Forest and the Colorado Department of Fire Prevention and Control, conducted a portion of the Blanca Wetlands Prescribed Burn. Crews burned around two ponds totaling 123 acres. The burn did not occur on Friday due to a forecast for poor smoke dispersion.

Blanca Wetlands is located approximately 11 miles northeast of Alamosa. This prescribed burn will improve habitat for nesting and migratory waterfowl in the wetlands. As many as 184 acres surrounding six ponds will be burned as part of this operation.

The full news release announcing this burn (that was issued earlier this month) is available under the "News" tab on this page. Maps of the area are available in the "Maps" tab.

Information on the Blanca Wetlands prescribed burn will be available on this page or on Facebook at @BLMColoradoFire.
